CLUBS AND ACTIVITIES

|
The Academic Challenge is a competitive event that several eighth graders participate in each year by competing with other academically gifted students in the city and state. Each school, public or private, designates a team of five members. The object of the challenge is to take a written test of 120 questions and finish in 60 minutes. The test is comprised of questions taken from the spheres of mathematics, social studies, English, science, literature, etc. The school groups are ranked in numerical order based on the test scores. Woodrow Wilson students have entered the city-wide competition since its inception. Woodrow Wilson students have also entered the N.J. Quiz Bowl. The students worked hard and placed in several competitions. |

Our Varsity and Junior Varsity squads practice many hours to prepare for their season. The uniform shirts are white and blue. Teamwork and sportsmanship is emphasized. Students must meet academic and behavioral eligibility requirements to participate and are monitored for these standards throughout the season. |

| Bowling

Our bowling program begins in January and ends in March. It lasts for ten weeks. The students go bowling every Thursday after school until 5 o'clock. Each bowling team plays against every other team in our club. The main goal is to improve personal scores while enjoying the game. We have had this bowling program for about eight years and over two hundred Woodrow Wilson students have participated in this activity. |

| CheerLeaders

The main goal of Cheerleading is to strive for team support and promote school spirit. Students in grades five through eight audition for the Cheerleading Squad and practice after school. The squad participates in cheerleading competitions. The squad placed 3rd in the city finals. |

| Chess

Many Woodrow Wilson students are members of the Chess Club and meet after school to learn the intricacies of the game. Our School participates in the Board of Education Chess Tournament for grades seven and eight which is held at Bayonne High School. Our team in the 1999-2000 school season won first place in the city and placed second in the county. In the 2000-2001 season Woodrow Wilson School placed second in the city finals. |

Citizenship

In order to promote good citizenship and a sense of civic responsibility, Woodrow Wilson conducts an annual food drive to benefit the needy. Food that is collected is donated to the food bank. Woodrow Wilson students also participate in Daffodil Days where the proceeds are donated to the American Heart Association and the American Cancer Society. |

One of the many community related activities that
Woodrow Wilson School actively participates in is Bayonne's Cleaner and
Greener Program. Woodrow Wilson has been involved in Cleaner and Greener
since its inception. The students of Woodrow Wilson School are responsible
for all the reforestation that has occurred on West 56th street. They
have also planted seedlings throughout the Woodrow Wilson neighborhood for
private citizens. The students of Woodrow Wilson continue to maintain
a cleaner environment by their monthly "Clean Sweep" of the immediate vicinity
of the school building. Individual classes have adopted a tree outside
of the school building and will maintain the area surrounding the tree.
We continue to pledge to make Bayonne a "Cleaner and Greener" city.
During the 2001-2002 school year, we expanded our Cleaner and Greener Program by designing and building our own geometric garden. Two hexagonal gardens containing various shrubs and greenery were completed in the Spring. Ms. Karafky and Mrs. Geary along with the 7th and 8th grade students created an attractive vista for the neighborhood to enjoy all year long. |

The Color Guard is comprised of 8th Grade students who during assemblies bring the audience to order, lead them in the Pledge of Allegiance, and the singing of the National Anthem. They also participate in community parades proudly displaying flags as well as the school banner. |

The members of the club will learn how to use video equipment and learn computerized editing programs. |

| D.A.R.E.

All students in fifth and seventh
grade participate in this program. This program teaches children
to resist drugs and is conducted by our local police department.

Teamwork and sportsmanship are emphasized while developing a finer understanding of the sport. Students must meet academic eligibility requirements to participate and are monitored for these standards throughout the season. |

B Team Junior Varsity Coach: Ms. Katie Roesinger |
The B Team consists of 20 girls
who are introduced to the sport. The squad plays weekly or on Sunday afternoons
in a non-competitive format. They play six minute time periods,
and have fun participating in the sport. |

We offer a guidance program for students at Woodrow Wilson School. Mrs. Moran is available to counsel our youngsters regarding their problems and concerns. The counselor enlists guest speakers and coordinates assembly programs. Some of the topics covered in these programs are careers, Character Education, health topics, and project ERASE. |

The Orchestra performs at winter Holiday Concerts, Spring Concerts, and Graduation. The main goal of the program is to instill a love of all forms of music. Students in grades fourth through eighth are given the opportunity to lean how to play a musical instrument of their choice. After reaching a certain level, the students participate in the school orchestra. |
Quiz Bowl

The Thinking Cap Quiz Bowl is a competitive event that occurs annually throughout the state of New Jersey. Seventh and eighth grade students take a computer generated multiple choice test with questions covering a variety of topics which include: literature, social studies, science, math, etc. They compete with students from other public and private schools in the state. The school groups are ranked in numerical order based on the scores of the test and the time it takes to complete the test. |
| Public Speaking

Learning to speak effectively in
front of an audience is the primary goal of Public Speaking. Upper
grade students use a variety of print and original materials for their
presentations. Members learn the effective use of body language
and dialect to gain comfort in speaking before a variety of audiences.
After many weeks of practice, students attend a Public Speaking Competition sponsored by the Bayonne Board of Education. All students walk away from their experiences with an attitude of confidence and accomplishment. The experience is the reward.

many musically talented students who comprise the Upper and Lower Grade
Choirs. Students in grades five through eight participate.

Science Fair

Woodrow Wilson students become a
part of the exciting world of science and education by entering
the district's Science Fair. Students conduct hands-on experiments
and then write their procedures. The results are then presented
to the entire student body along with visiting parents. The students
at Woodrow Wilson conduct valuable scientific work. Through their
efforts, the students' contributions are part of a citywide and then countywide
Science Fair. Through this experience the students will increase
their knowledge about the environment and the world they live in.

The Woodrow Wilson Student Council provides students with a positive experience in government. Composed of representatives from fifth, sixth, seventh, and eighth grades, students develop a calendar of events for the school to increase school spirit among the student body. Through this process students gain the insight into the election process and develop positive life skills that will help them to get along and work with others. Through the Council, students are encouraged to develop responsibility, show creativity, and work cooperatively with others throughout the year. |

Students who are included in the
Talented Art Program at Woodrow Wilson School are given the opportunity
to explore the art world in a more in-depth way. These students
show a special talent and interest in art. They participate in special
projects such as stage design, building displays, contests, and
also pursue personal interests in art. |
| Track Team

The track meet is held either the last week of May or the beginning of June. The events the grammar schools compete in are the 100 yard dash, the 440 yard relay, and the shot putt. The teams are comprised of a boys and girls team of seventh and eighth graders. The meets are from 11:30 A.M. to 3:30 P.M., and it is an enjoyable day watching all of the schools compete. |
| Volleyball

The Bayonne Board of Education sponsors a coed volleyball training program. The Woodrow Wilson School Wildcats participate in this program. The seventh and eighth grade Wildcats develop volleyball skills and sportsmanship. The students are expected to have a good attitude and use responsible behavior during the season, which runs from mid September through November. The students attend practice biweekly. Each Saturday, the team is given the opportunity to match their skills with other elementary schools in the district. |

Yearbook
|
The yearbook is a special project of our eighth grade students. It is not just a memory book for our graduating class, but a reflective look at major events of our school throughout the year. The students have a hand in the creation and layout of the yearbook and are responsible for typing the information to bring the book to publication. |

| Camera and Video

The Camera and Video Club explores the creative
world of digital photography and video. The students learn the aspects
of taking photographs, using proper lighting techniques, settings, point
of view, and subject alignment. The students will learn how to manipulate
their photos using software on the computers. The children will
also learn to edit digital video tape, create movies, and the proper handling
and filming using a digital video recorder. The children will be introduced
to Final Cut Pro and I-Movie, both of which are video editing programs.

Our varsity squads have continually progressed
in athletic abilities. We were City Champs in the regular season
2001-2202 and placed second in the payoffs. Skills, teamwork, academics,
sportsmanship, and appropriate behavior are always emphasized.
