Washington Community School’s Co-ed
Volleyball team competed in the city championship yesterday
against Horace Man. Both schools came into last night’s
competition prepared to win, but only one team would be
victorious, and it was our very own, Washington Patriots
with a score of 26 to 24! Patriot writers and members
of the team interviewed Mr. Kobryn before last night’s
game, he said “I think we have a really great and
competitive team. From time to time we struggle playing
as a team, but as the season progressed we definitely
improved in that area. I think we’re a dedicated
bunch and I predict we do well in the tournament and hopefully
we get to the championship round. “ Obviously his
prediction was correct! When asked about the team championship
victory, Coach Kobryn said, “I’m definitely
excited! The team and I have never won a tournament in
the four years I have been a part of the WCS volleyball
program, we made history tonight!” Eighth grader
Joel Abreu scored the 2 winning points for the Patriots.
His final sever won the game with an Ace!

School Spelling Bee
Washington School held their annual
spelling bee on Friday, November 2. There were approximately
20 contestants competing for the third, second,
and first prizes, which included two movie tickets
to Frank’s Theatres. After two hours of intense
competition, the winners are as followes; First
place was Kelly Balla, an eighth grader who has
experience in the district spelling bee from previous
years. Second place, Liam McNaught, a seventh grader
who spelled his words with little to no struggle,
and third place went to Mario Faris, a fifth grader
who has never attended the spelling bee before.
What exactly is the purpose of a spelling bee? The
spelling bee is a contest to promote students to
improve their spelling, and increase their vocabulary.
The word bee, as used in spelling bee, is a language
puzzle that has never been exactly accounted for.
Spelling bee is an American term. It first appeared
in print in 1875, but it seems certain that the
word was used orally for several years before that. The
spelling bee was a success in Washington School
and its long traditions will go on for many years
to come. Congratulations to all the winners!
