Multiple Intelligences Resources

Dr. Howard Gardner, in his revealing book Frames of the Mind:  The Theory of Multiple Intelligences, suggest that all individuals have a wealth of capabilities within that can be developed and enhanced given the right learning environment.  Personal genetics and the experiences and opportunities offered determine whether these intelligences are developed and fully utilized.

Students in our classes are not all alike.  They have different learning strengths and preferences.  This knowledge is not new.  We have always known of these variation among children.  Nevertheless, the tradition in schools has been to focus primarily on learning and achievement that is based on language and logic.  Most formal assessments of learning, including IQ and standardized tests, have limited the information schools collect to these two areas.  Consequently, other types of areas of intelligence often have been pushed aside or relegated to lesser status.  Classroom activities also have reflected these same priorities and have often left behind students who possess learning strengths in other areas.

Differentiated
Instruction Resources

Differentiated instruction is about using teaching strategies that connect with individual student's learning strategies. It's about being flexible and open to change. It's also about taking risks and trying teaching and learning strategies that you would have otherwise ignored. The ultimate goal is to provide a learning environment that will maximize the potential for student success. In most classrooms, some students struggle with learning, others perform well beyond grade-level expectations, and the rest fit somewhere in between.  Within each of these categories of students, individuals also learn in a variety of ways and have different interest. The import thing to remember is to hold on to the effective teaching strategies that lead students to positive learning outcomes and to make adjustments when necessary. Whenever a teacher reaches out to an individual or small group to vary his or her teaching in order to create the best learning experience possible, that teacher is differentiating instruction.

Comprehension Strategies That Work
What Is/Are Question-Answer Relationships?
Question-Answer Relationships were created as a way to help students realize that the answers they seek are related to the type of question that is asked; it encourages them to be strategic about their search for answers based on an awareness of what different types of questions look for.
In short, there are four QARs:
     1. right there
     2. think and search
     3. author and you
     4. on my own
How Do QARs Work?
     1. Right There.   The answer is usually contained in a single sentence, and the words used to create the
sentence are often also in that one sentence.
     2. Think and Search.  The answer is in the text, but you might have to look in several different sentences to
          find it.
     3. Author and You.  The answer is not in the text, but you still need information that the author has given you,
combined with what you already know, in order to respond to this type of question.
     4. On My Own.  The answer is not in the text, and in fact you don't even have to read the text to be able to
         answer it.
