SCHOOL ACTIVITIES/CLUBS

Cleaner and Greener Club

A new edition to Horace Mann School's list of clubs and activities is the Cleaner/Greener club under the direction of Mrs. Hennessey, Mrs. Freed and Mrs. Lawsky. The club has tried to make our students more aware of a cleaner environment at home and at school. They have several activities during the school year.

Athletics

Horace Mann School enters a variety of Cheerleading Competitions.
The main goal of Cheerleading is to strive for team support and school spirit. Girls from grades 5 through 8 must continually practice, practice, practice. Our school has won a variety of trophies which are on display in the main office.
Horace Mann fields both boy's and  girl's basketball teams. A coed volleyball team rounds out the after school athletic program.

Student Council

The Horace Mann Student Council provides students with a positive experience in government. Students campaign for office and speak before an assembly of their peers. Through this process students gain the insight into the election process and develop positive life skills that will help them to get along and work with others.

Horace Mann School Band

The main goal of the school band is to instill a love of all forms of music- from rock to Bach. Students in grades four through eight are given the opportunity to learn how to play a musical instrument of their choice. Classroom lessons incorporating lesson books, band arrangements and recordings add to the children's knowledge of their particular instrument. After reaching a certain level, the children participate in the school concerts which are usually given twice a year

Computer Club

The computer club consists of 22 students from grades 6 to 8.  Although some time is set aside for using the available computer programs, the club's primary purpose is to learn more about the various features of the computer i.e. control panel and server.  Other technologies will also be taught such as the scanner, video camera and digital cameras. Club members are now taking pictures of most school functions which they then edit crop and print. Students organize and design the format for the placement of the photos on the bulletin board near Computer Lab.

Academic Challenge

The main goal of the Academic Challenge is to allow students to utilize their academic ability by competing with other academically gifted students in the city and state. Students take a multiple choice test with questions from the spheres of mathematics, social studies, English, science, literature, etc. They compete with a group of students from the other public and private schools in the state. Horace Mann students have entered the city-wide competition since its inception. Since 1996 students have also entered the N.J. Quiz Bowl. They have done well but have not yet placed in either competition.

Forensics Club

Children in the seventh and eighth grades learn to speak in front of a large group and to give meaning to a piece of literature.  Horace Mann students continue to enter the Bayonne Board of Education Competition and have consistantly placed in a variety of categories.

Peer Leadership Program

The Peer Leadership Program is open to all students in grades 7 and 8. Through a carefully constructed selection process, those students who have demonstrated the potential and commitment to become peer Leaders are chosen to participate in the program.  The children are then guided by trained teachers, through the process of becoming future leaders.  The students learn through a variety of skill building activities, the art of communication skills.  Effective listening skills, and understanding other peopleí's feelings are some of the essential skills developed during the program.
