Online
learning has arrived at Bayonne High
School! Advanced Creative Writing Online
is an elective
course being offered to the students of Bayonne High
School. The students who choose to
take this course embark upon a unique high school learning experience.
They are assisted by the latest educational
opportunities offered collaboratively by the English and technology
departments.
Virtual learning courses are common on college campuses and are
growing
in popularity with post secondary trade schools; however, the average
high school in New Jersey does
not offer their students this educational initiative. When asked
about the new course offering, Mr. David Minard, Director of Technology, commented, “I am thrilled that our Bayonne High
School students are adding their voice
to the rapidly expanding catalogue of creative writing available
on the World Wide Web. Web literature is truly the future of the
written word.” While participating in this distance learning environment,
students sharpen their writing skills, learn to use technology
more effectively and receive an individualized course of study
via the Internet. Online courses also provide
students with more scheduling flexibility while affording them
the opportunity accumulate credits beyond the school day.
The
computer is the classroom for students taking online classes, however,
they must complete the same course requirements and meet the standards
of proficiency that apply to any course. The students and their
teacher communicate using email and a discussion page on the secure
website set up by Mrs. Patricia Kaczka (BHS
technology facilitator) and Mrs. Maryanne Giovinazzo (the
class instructor). Students receive their assignments via email,
which includes an explanation of the assignment (it is also posted
on the website), additional reference links that the student can
follow for further explanation and samples of the assignment, and
a deadline for when the assignment is due. Students have the opportunity
to “speak” to their teacher at any time via email. Students also
have the added benefit of having a “face to face” meeting with
their teacher in the school library if they need any additional
assistance. Ms. Patricia Bull, Director of English stated, “Mrs. Giovinazzo has
combined her expertise in writing and technology in designing this
up to date practical course. Her high school students are benefiting
from the opportunity to improve their writing skills while working
independently with teacher support. The students will be well prepared
for college expectations.”
Students
who choose to take the course should enjoy writing short stories,
scenes, plays, TV scripts and poetry since
all are included in the course curriculum. The prerequisites for
the course include a B in English, the approval of the Director
of English, some knowledge of word processing, and are able to
send email with attachments. Mrs. Giovinazzo wants
to alert students that, “online
learning is not for everyone, students who choose to take an online
course need to be sure that they can work well independently, be
self motivated, and have good time management skills. A former
student
summed up
her enthusiasm for the course; “There is not a subject
better than advanced creative writing online. It has challenged
my ability to be creative, use my imagination, do my work at home
and still keep in touch with my teacher whenever I need help.” |
