HOW LUCKY

The pen presses hard against the paper
As I try to concentrate on my work
The wind is making noise
The time is passing by
And I'm not even half way done

I try to think but my mind feels full
I stare at everyone in my class
They all look so different yet also the same
So many names and faces make me think
How lucky I am to be here

No discrimination or hatred
Nobody being disrespectful
Many races, all treated equally
How lucky are we all to be here
In this environment, in this peace

The teacher congratulates us
On how good we've all been
The words feel so gentle
As they flow through my mind like music
And I bet everyone feels the same way

I'm happy to be in America
With all this diversity and equality
I'm happy to be in high school
And see how respectful people are

And I'm proud to be Colombian
Because I know that no matter what skin color I have
Or what country I came from
Or what language I speak
I'll feel safe, loved, and happy
And I know I'll be treated
With no prejudice or discrimination
Like everyone in this world should be treated
