SPECIAL PROJECTS
AND PROGRAMS
IN OUR SCHOOL

P.S. # 14 houses Bayonne's Gifted and Talented Program, which is committed to offering a high level, well rounded education to an ethnically diverse urban student population. The school not only prepares students for the technological challenges of the 21st Century, but also offers an accelerated and enriched academic program enhanced by a balanced exposure to the arts.

The Intellectually Gifted Program administers to the needs of students who show a potential for consistently excelling in the academic areas. While our courses include the traditional subject areas, they are taught on a level commensurate with a high school curriculum.

The Art Program demonstrates artistic talent and fosters the appreciation for the visual arts through the use of slides, books, reproductions, Internet web sites and virtual museums, videos, art museum field trips, and lectures. A team teaching approach is taken within social studies classes to interrelate artists and their work with various periods in history.

The Psychomotor Program is geared toward developing the talents of the kinesthetically gifted child. Using this venue to enhance learning in other areas, students use probability and statistics to organize offensive and defensive strategies. They also use geometry to understand correct use of angles and physics to move more effectively. This connects mathematical principals to psychomotor activities, and gives students tools to refine skills and improve performance. Rhythmic activity and dance often integrate music and cultural education. Inter and intra-personal skill development is inherent in employing good teamwork. Overall, the psychomotor program focuses on linking theory and practice for maximum educational impact.

The Music Program develops and showcases vocal and /or instrumental talent. It offers students the opportunity to perform in the choir and concert band. The instrumental music program  provides students with various opportunities to play and learn music. Fourth grade students are required to play the violin for one year, which they may continue in later grades.
The goal of the instrumental music program is to teach students the fundamentals of music  and how to effectively perform in an ensemble.  There are three levels of bands for wind and percussion players and three separate string groups, depending upon grade and ability.

Students at P.S. # 14 are offered numerous enrichment opportunities of the highest quality. In order to meet the needs of each student, a newly implemented Gifted Area Program (GAP) has been established. GAP courses address each student's particular talent that was identified at enrollment. Three times a week students are given the opportunity to diverge from their regular compacted curriculum and devote time to enriching their artistic, musical or psychomotor abilities. After completing interest inventories, the designated intellectually gifted students are placed in either math, science, social studies or language arts classes. These courses, which employ  the multiple intelligences approach, combined with cooperative learning, encompass a wide variety of thematic topics allowing students to explore, discover, share and create. GAP courses change each marking period in order for students to have maximum exposure to a variety of academic challenges.

The NASA Education Program is a part of the School # 14 curriculum.
"To inspire the next generation of explorers...as only NASA can" is the program's mission. All of the lessons and activities in P.S. # 14's space science Gap courses are guided by this mission. Our students experiment with principles of aeronautics and rocketry. They analyze land features of Mars and compare them with Earth. The students formulate conclusions based on data by accessing NASA maintained Internet sites. Students become aware of the international effort focused on the creation of the International Space Station.

The Stock Market Game is a newly welcomed addition to our program. In the Stock Market Game the students work in teams as investors and participate in a simulated, internet-based, investment program which works based on the real life stock market. Through this experience, students are able to gain the knowledge and understanding of basic economic concepts and how they relate to the stock market. They are able to analyze stocks using various stock selection strategies, demonstrate proficiency in the use of decision making and reasoning skills in stock selection, demonstrate an ability to distinguish between speculation and sound investment, develop a personal investment plan based on personal goals and demonstrate an ability to relate and assess the influence of current events on stock prices and trading decisions.

The Environmental Science Program offers students the opportunity to use critical thinking skills to find solutions to environmental problems focusing on habitat loss, endangered species, global warming, and ozone depletion. Further examples of this innovative educational method are the annual 5th grade three-day whale watching exploration to Massachusetts and the 8th grade three-day trip to the Pocono Environmental Educational Center.

P. S. # 14 students are becoming creative problem solvers!  Three teams of 7th and 8th graders have joined the "Future Problem Solvers Program (FPSP). The FPSP is a six step model that explores, challenges and proposes action plans to complex societal problems, such as fads, financial security, amateur sports, the internet, and genetic engineering. Each team will compete and submit to FPSP, two practice problems, after conducting research on the topic. FPSP supplies us with resource materials, rules, and deadlines for submissions. Trained evaluators score student work and return it with feedback including suggestions for improvement. Finally, one qualifying problem (for competition) will be submitted. Top scoring teams  are invited to compete on the state level.

Some of the goals of this program are to increase creative and analytical thinking skills, explore societal issues and extend perceptions of the real world, improve communication skills, promote research, and encourage cooperative, responsible group membership.

In the World Language Program students are exposed to Spanish two periods a week. They are assessed using a variety of means, which incorporate the Multiple Intelligences. In accordance with the New Jersey Core Curriculum Standards for World Language, oral communication and culture are stressed. Sentence structure, writing, and reading are also taught. The goal of this program is to enable students to converse in Spanish and to gather information from written sources.
