GENERAL INFORMATION
-
These lessons are the culmination of this weather unit. Students
have an opportunity to apply their knowledge of weather vocabulary and
concepts to actual real time data to solve a real world problem.
-
These lessons rely on real time data available on the Internet. Using
real time data can sometimes be difficult, since it is very difficult to
anticipate what the students will actually see when they go to the web
site. Therefore, it is necessary to be able to really understand
what each of these real time data sites actual show. In addition,
it mandates the teacher to incorporate a bit of flexibility when presenting
this material, since what you saw during your preparation period may not
be what you see in the classroom two hours later.
LESSON PLANS
-
REAL TIME DATA LESSON #1: Allows
students to explore real time data available on the Internet. The
goal of this lesson is to sequentially introduce student to various weather
maps. Students answer questions and make predictions about current
weather conditions in the United States. The lesson culminates in
the identification of severe weather and recording the actual warning issued
for that storm area.
-
REAL TIME DATA LESSON #2: Allows
students the opportunity to role play as a storm expert consultant to NOAA's
Storm Prediction Center. Students utilize and analyze real time data
to predict the path of a storm for a 24 hour time period. The students'
task is to predict the town or city most likely to be affected by the storm
24 hours from present. As a consultant, the student needs this information
to issue a storm warning with a specific storm safety plan to a town or
city council.
