OUR STAR – THE SUN
PORTFOLIO PROJECT
Intermediate Level



After reading the information on the main webpage, its time to put your knowledge to work.  You will create a SUN PORTFOLIO consisting of the projects listed below.  Create an original artwork for the portfolio cover. The portfolio will utilize Howard Gardener’s Multiple Intelligences and a MULTIPLE INTELLIGENCE INVENTORY is linked here for your use.  Complete the Multiple Intelligence Inventory to find your strongest Intelligence area.  Then pick at least 3 different projects from the list below.  One (1) project must be from your strongest Intelligence area, one (1) from one of your weaker areas, and the other project is your choice.  You will give an oral presentation of your portfolio.  Collaborate  with a group of students to help with your demonstrations.  All group demonstrations only have to be presented once.

LINGUISTIC

 Projects:
1) Complete a 2 page WRITTEN REPORT about the Sun. (INTRAPERSONAL)
2) Create a SUN WORD SEARCH PUZZLE using VOCABULARY words.
3) Create a SUN CROSSWORD PUZZLE.  Write puzzle clues from this Sun unit.
4) Create a SUN BOARD GAME.


SPATIAL

 Projects:
1) Create a SHADOWPLOT to find geographic north.

2) MAKE A SUNDIAL – we are in the Northern Hemisphere.  Use the webpage to find the latitude of your town and then make the sundial.  Be prepared to demonstrate how the sundial works. Grades 4-6 use the NOVICE directions. Grades 7-8 use the INTERMEDIATE directions.


LOGICAL

 Projects:
1) SUNSPOT ACTIVITY   and  SUNSPOT DATA and SUNSPOT ACTIVITY CHART - Use the linked sunspot webpages to complete the tables in the Sunspot Activity.  Using the data you have collected, complete the Sunspot Activity Chart and be prepared to discuss Solar Maximum and Solar Minimum.

2) OBSERVING AND SEQUENCING SUNSPOT IMAGES - You will receive a set of 5 lettered, undated white light solar images.  Compare and sequence them according to the sunspots you observe in the image.  Be prepared to give reasons for your sequence.   Next, using the dated X-Ray solar images, compare the undated white light images and match them with the X-ray images.  Use any method for comparison that your group agrees upon, but be prepared to give reasons for your method.

KINESTHETIC
 Projects:
1) PLAYGROUND MODEL FOR ROTATION (Part A) - This is the 1st of a 2 part project.  You must complete both parts of this project.  This model should include the entire class and be lead by 1 student (INTERPERSONAL) who will prepare all materials for the class and direct the rotation model.
2) SOLAR ROTATION (Part B) - This part of the project will require the Internet.  Using observation techniques, a group of students will view the solar images and determine the rotation rate of the Sun.

INTERPERSONAL
Projects:
1) One student will direct the PLAYGROUND MODEL FOR ROTATION (KINESTHETIC). This student should divide the class into 2 groups, one which forms the rotating circle and the other group will observe from a distance.  The directing student will create all signs and labels and will use the stopwatch to make multiple measurements of the rotation rate.
2) One student will direct a group of student in singing an ORIGINAL SONG (MUSICAL) about the Sun.
INTRAPERSONAL
 SUN BIBLIOGRAPHY – read one of the book selections from this list or a book of your choice.Write a poem or a report about the Sun. (LINGUISTIC)


MUSICAL

 Write an ORIGINAL SONG about the Sun from the information in this unit.  Try to collaborate with another student by using a poem written by someone in the class and put the poem to music.  You may perform the song by yourself, or you may want to create your own Sun Music Group. (INTERPERSONAL)


NATURALISTIC

Projects:
1) How does the Sun effect life on this planet?  Create a web map that shows the Sun’s impact on the earth.
2) Create a 3D representation of the Sun.  Using natural materials, create a 3 dimentional object showing the different layers of the Sun.
