Essay Assignment: the “New Imperialism”

Beginning in the latter half of the 19th century, European nations embarked on a period of expansionism that was far greater than its previous global conquest during the 16th and 17th centuries.  Your assignment is to write a 500 word essay on one of the three essay questions below.

 

 

A.     What were the motives of the “new imperialism” and how did anti – imperialist respond to it?

 

 

B.     “When [the imperialist] wants a new market for his adulterated…goods, he sends a missionary to teach the natives the gospel peace.  The natives kill the missionary: [the imperialist] flies to arms in defense of [religion]: fights for it, conquers for it, and takes the market as a reward from heaven.”

4.       Footnotes:  you must footnote when you; a) quote directly, and b) borrow ideas.  In addition to that you must use at least four sources of information and cite no more than fifteen percent of your essay (approximately seventy – five words).

Friday, March 7th – rough draft is submitted for teacher’s review.

Friday, March 21st: submit final draft.
