The Dirt Merchants

Student Activity

1- Using the above chart, study relative availability of nutrients ( N, P, K ) in  relationship to soil pH.  Do you notice a correlation between soil pH & availability of nutrients ( N, P, K ) ?

2-  Within which pH range does Nitrogen level become highest/lowest?
Within which pH range does Phosphorus level become highest/lowest?
Within which pH range does Potassium level become highest/lowest?

3- What hypothetical statement can you make about relationship between:

               pH & Nitrogen level?
               pH & Phosphorus level?
               pH & Potassium level?

4- On graph paper, make a hypothetical graph for each of 3 nutrients:
( N, P, K ) in regards to soil pH.

Use the following nitrogen example as a guide.

5- Would you expect similar results for your local soil samples?  Why/why not?

6- Take soil samples from your locality & conduct following soil tests:
(pH level, N, P, K ) as per instructions of LaMotte Soil Test Kit  or similar & record readings (data) in a chart similar to the one below.

pH

Nitrogen

Phosphorus

Potassium

7- Using collected data, make graphs for each of nutrient levels similar to    those graphs shown in step #4.

8- Compare actual graph result to hypothetical.
   Are they similar?  Yes/no?  Explain.

9- Does evidence of actual graphs support hypothesis?  Yes/no?
   Explain why/why not?

10- Draw conclusion.

11- Go to view data & using compiled information from data base plot all school soil readings on 3 individual graphs for N, P, K in relation to pH.

12- Record observations for N.
    Record observations for P.
    Record observations for K.

13- Does correlation exist between:

       pH & N?                 Explain why/why not?
       pH & P?                 Explain why/why not?
       pH & K?                 Explain why/why not?
