Why is the grass always greener on the other side? Why do grandma's tomatoes always grow bigger and look fresher than yours? The answer may be before your very eyes and contained in the soil. Nutrients such as nitrogen, phosphorus (potash), and potassium are critical for plant growth. A fertile soil is one that is able to furnish a complete supply of these nutrients for a growing plant-- much like a well balanced diet. Soil pH is also an indication of its fertility. The Dirt Merchant Project is set up to find out if pH has an effect on overall plant nutrient availability.
The
purpose of this project is to collect soil samples, test for these critical
nutrients [N P K], as well as pH, and see if there is a correlation between
pH and nutrient availability.
