Science Real Time Activity  (one computer class and internet specialists)

Goal:  Students will identify the types of plate boundaries by plotting the depth of earthquakes.

Time Frame:  One 40 minute pre- activity discussion period;
Two 40 minute activity periods

Pre activity discussion will be based on readings from science text, literature, and other ancillary materials.

FYI- Determining the Depths of an Earthquake

Teacher Note: Teacher may want class to compare earthquake frequency in the three areas plotted on the map.

Science Hands-On Activity Parts 1 & 2

Goal: Students will determine how the magnitude of an earthquake affects a building, and prove how materials can reduce the amount of damage.

Time Frame: One 40 minute pre -activity discussion period;
Two 40 minute activity periods

Teacher Note:
Activity 1:  The amount of damage caused by an earthquake depends on strength and how long it lasts.

Teacher Note:
Activity 2:  Whether a building has heavy objects at the top or bottom has a lot to do with the amount of damage done during an earthquake.

Math Real Time Activities ( one computer class with internet specialist)

Activity 1

Goal:  Students will use real time data to determine if there is a correlation between the depth and magnitude of an earthquake.

Time Frame: Two 40 minute periods for pre-activity discussion to introduce graphs and rounding;
Two 40 minute periods to complete real time data activity

See sample graph

Activity 2 (one computer class with internet specialist)
Goal:  Students will use real time data to determine the frequency of earthquakes having different magnitudes.

Time Frame:  One 40 minute period to review graphing and rounding;
Two 40 minute periods to complete real time data activity

See sample graph

Language Arts Activities

Activities 1 and 2  (computer lab or learning center)

Goal: Students will use the Internet and books to research first- hand accounts of earthquake experiences for creative writing and role playing.

Pre-activitiy:  Review writing process

Time Frame:  Three to four 40 minute periods

Activity 3 (computer class with internet specialist)
Time Frame:  Two 40 minute periods

Social Studies Activities

Activity 1 (computer lab or learning center)

Goal:  Students will create a timeline

Time Frame:  Three 40 minute periods

Activity 2 (computer lab or learning center)
Goal:  Students will research and report on eathquake damage.

Time Frame:  Three 40 minute periods

Activities 3 and 4 (computer lab or learning center)

Goal:  Students will identify different cultures' explanations of natural phenomena.

Time Frame: Two 40 minute periods

Activity 5 (internet specialist and one computer classroom)

Goal:  Students will reinforce map skills using latitude and longitude.
Teacher will provide class with world desk maps.

Time Frame: Two 40 minute periods
