Become a Writer!

     Pretend you were caught in an earthquake and write a short story about your experience before, during, and after the earthquake.  Look at the following sites for information on earthquakes and eyewitness accounts.

Activity 2

Live News! 

    Have the class form groups of 4.  Assign a role to each member of the group.  In a group there should be a news reporter and three people in a community that are recovering from an earthquake.  The reporter will interview each member.  The following questions should be asked as well as adding their own:

A.  Where were you when the earthquake happened?
B.  What did you do to help your family members during the earthquake?
C.  What were you most afraid of during the earthquake?
D.  How are you helping to rebuild your community?

Have each group perform in front of the class as the teacher videotapes it.  They will be able to see themselves on t.v.!

    Create a computerized puzzle using vocabulary words that we studied in our earthquake unit.  Follow the instructions on Puzzle Maker to create your own earthquake crossword puzzle.  Print out your puzzle and share with a friend!

Become an Author & Illustrator!

    In many cultures, myths were used to explain natural events that were frightening or mysterious.  Algonquin Indians believed that earthquakes were caused when a great tortoise that supported the Earth shuffled his feet and caused the earth to shake.  Create your own myth to explain the natural event called an earthquake which could be mysterious and frightening.  Develop and illustrate a  story book for children.  The following links can be used to help you create your own myth.
