Language Arts Connection
1.  Captain's Log
     After reading the Captain's log, you are to pretend that you are the captain of your own ship.

a)  Name and describe your ship.
b)  Write a story about your journey (in your journal) .  Include in your story:
          1. a character analysis of crew members
          2. destination and preferred route
          3. choose one disastrous situation
               a)food shortage
               b)storm at sea
          4. a description of how you met the challenge
          5. a minimum of five of the following words:
             latitude           longitude          current                   southern hemisphere
             high tide         low tide            gulf stream             stratus clouds
             global            coastline            hurricane                northern hemisphere
             equator          tides                 satellite                   nimbus clouds

2.  Journal Entries

a) Develop a glossary of geographic and navigational terms introduced throughout
    the project.  Keep this glossary in your journal.

b) Every day collect and record longitude and latitude information and weather conditions
    in your journal.

c) Each week, answer the following question: "Was weather a factor in distance traveled
    this week?"  Explain your answer in complete sentences as a journal entry.
 
 

3.  Poetry
     Using the following poetry form "Cinquain" compose a poem about the Battleship NJ.
     Completed project will be typed using Kid Pix Studio and presented as a slide show.

4.  Communicate
     Compose a letter to e-mail to the ship's captain.  Before you begin, develop a list of questions
     you would ask about life on a ship.
 

5.   Classroom Guest
      Your teacher may invite a retired naval representative to speak to your class about life aboard a
      battleship.  Prepare a set of discussion questions in your journal for the speaker.
      After the visit, don't forget to compose a thank you letter to the speaker.  It will  be
      typed and illustrated using the computer.
 

6.    Project Documentation
a) Create a pictorial documentation of the Battleship NJ project using the digital camera.  Your project
    will be posted on this Web page.

b) Share your project with the community.  Take pictures and write articles for the local newspaper.
 


7.   Student Jobs
     Various jobs will be available throughout this project.  You must apply for the job(s) you want in
     the classroom and list the reasons why you should be selected for that job.Your teacher will give you
     a list of job descriptions.

8.  Scavenger Hunt
    Participate in the Fishing for Clues activity. When you are done, compose and
     send E-Mail to be published in the Panama Canal site guestbook.
