1. Fishing for Clues!!

Keep your eyes open for the following clues.  You will surf the Panama Canal site for the answers to these questions. Before you go to the site, print a copy of the questions below.

A.  Go to the Canal History site:
       1.  List the three main problems during the building of the Panama Canal.
       2.  Who ordered the first survey of a proposed canal route through
            Panama?
       3.  How many years, and at what cost, did this project take?

B.  Sail on to the General Information site:
      4.   How long, in both kilometers and miles, is the Canal from deep water in the Atlantic to
           deep water in the Pacific.
      5.  About how long (in hours) does it take an average ship to cross the Canal?
      6.  Name the largest earth dam ever constructed as well as the largest man-made lake in
           the world.

C.  Remain on cruise control to the Programs and Projects site:
      7.  List the three options that will be studied for improving Canal operations systems.
      8.  Explain what the vision is for the future of the Canal.

D.  Full speed ahead and into the Canal Transitions site:
      9.  What is the month, day, and year of the signing of the Panama Canal Treaty?
    10.  Explain what happened with the Canal on October 1, 1999.

    11.  What happened June 8, 1999?  Write your answer in a complete sentence and include  the
           NAME OF THE SITE where you found the answer.
 


2. All Hands on Deck!  Bayonne - Home Base

a)   Our ship has docked!  These are a few of the places we've seen since we've come home.
Prepare a pictorial presentation of five or more points of interest in Bayonne.  Include a photograph and a short  paragraph ( 3 or 4 sentences) describing each picture.

b)  Interview at least 3 people to obtain first hand information about the history of  Bayonne.

c)  Create a time line showing major events in the history of Bayonne.
