Mathematics Courses

Algebra I
Successful completion of the course requirements includes the ability to perform basic operations, with integers, solve linear equations, factoring of polynomials, simplification of fractions, combining fractions, the absolute value of a number, expressions containing absolute value, equalities involving absolute value, locating points in a plane, plotting points in a plane, graphing linear equations and solving systems of linear equations.

Geometry
Successful completion of the course includes the ability to define basic geometric terms and do simple proofs; area and perimeter of polygons; congruent and similar triangles; simple trigonometry problems and applications of the distance formula and slope.

Algebra II
Successful completion of the course requirements includes the ability to perform: linear equations and inequalities, absolute value and problem solving, factoring polynomials, operations with rational expressions, real numbers, quadratic equations, analytic geometry, systems of equations and the use of graphing calculators.

Pre-Calculus
In order to successfully complete the course, the student is expected to master trigonometry, sequences, series, conic sections, coordinate geometry and the mechanics of advanced algebra utilizing graphing calculators.

Probability and Statistics
A requirement for successful completion of the course includes developing skill in collection, analyzing and drawing conclusions from data. This includes drawing graphs and histograms, calculating the mean and standard deviation and the use of the normal distribution. A high level of proficiency in the use of a graphing calculator is required of all students.

Calculus

This course is designed for the students who do not elect to take Calculus APH as their senior Mathematics course. This course continues to develop skills and introduces Calculus concepts to the class.

Successful completion of this course includes: The utilization of the T183 in Mathematical applications, the finding of derivatives by definition, compact methods for finding derivatives, integration, applications of differentiation and integration.

Mathematics Honors Program
Procedures for Admittance
During the Freshman Year, students are selected for the Mathematics Honors Program at Bayonne High School as a result of an extensive process including careful scrutiny of all available data and achievement in major areas.

The following are Honors Courses: Geometry Honors, Algebra II Honors, 5 periods, Geometry/Algebra II 10 periods, Pre Calculus  and Trigonometry 10 periods, Pre-Calculus Honors which meets 5 periods a week, in order to complete Geometry, Algebra II, Pre-Calculus by the end of junior year, thus enabling the student to complete Honors Math 12 (Calculus) during their senior year.

It is hoped that each student taking advantage of this opportunity will have an intense interest in mathematics commensurate with his/her mathematics ability.
