Introduction

The Industrial Revolution transformed the economic and social structure of Europe and led the world into the era of modernization.  Great Britain would become the first nation – state to take up the stewardship of industrialization during the early part of the nineteenth century, and subsequently experience economic advancement and social unrest as well.  This industrialization generally occurred in the urban centers, thus creating new migratory patterns from which people from the countryside would come to cities in search of a better way of life.  Unfortunately, many of these individuals suffered considerable hardships during this period.
