Congratulations to Mary J. Donohoe, eighth graders, Hasumi Hayashi & Dana Suthammanont.  They will be attending the National History Day Statewide Competition at William Paterson University on May 4th.
Congratulations to eighth grader, Lauren Soriano. Lauren won the silver medal at the the Hudson County Science Fair.

Congratulations to the boys and girls basketball teams at Nicholas Oresko School! Both boys and girls teams were undefeated champions this season! Also, congratulations to Nyla Mulcahy, grade 8 student, who was named MVP of the league for the third year in a row, Paul Mulcahy, grade 7 student, who was named MVP of the league, and James Bartnett, grade 8 student, who was named MVP of the game. Special thanks to coaches Mr. Baccarella, Mr. Goodhart, and Mrs. Kim for their dedication.
Congratulations to Philip G. Vroom School's third grade student, Jared Williams, for winning first prize for the primary level in The 2012 NED Show Writing Contest. Jared wrote an extraordinary essay explaining how NED helps him to be a champion. Jared was awarded $50 in NED bucks, and he also earned his classmates a bundle of NED prizes.
Lincoln Community School Eighth Grader, Karen Martinez, will be going to the “BIG TOP” when she and her family visit The Big Apple Circus this December! Karen received four tickets, as first place winner in 8th grade, for her portrait of Uncle Sam in the county wide art contest sponsored by “Kidsville News”  and “The Big Apple Circus."

Henry E. Harris School 7th Grade student Alissa May Garilao was chosen as the Top Winner Of The New Jersey Fire Prevention Poster Contest. Her winning poster design will be distributed throughout the State of New Jersey.  Alissa's prize is a laptop computer and a printer.  We are all very proud of her, especially her Art Teacher, Joan O'Connell! CONGRATULATIONS!

The 19th annual Bayonne Board of Education Academic Challenge was held on March 15 at Horace Mann School. This distinguished competition requires eighth grade students to answer various questions from nine different academic areas.

Congratulations to Nicholas Oresko School chess teams, and coach Erin Cook for winning first place in the 2011-2012 Bayonne Elementary Chess League Tournament. Eighth grader, Kapil Kanakaraj was named this year's "Premier Player" for his dedication, strategy, and leadership qualities. In addition, The Oresko School "A" team captured third place in the New Jersey State Junior High School Championship. Go Jaguars!

The annual Forensic Competition was held at MCS on Tuesday, May 17th and Thursday, May 19th. 160 students competed in rounds one and two, with 75 students moving on to round three on Thursday. The awards ceremony was held on Thursday May 19.

          In head-to-head competition at the District Geography Bee, 8th grade contestant Kamau La Guerre of Horace Mann earned 1st place title after correctly answering three questions in the final Championship Rounds.  After a grueling one hour and fifteen minute competition, Kamau battled twenty-one other 7th and 8th grade contestants answering every question correctly except one.  2nd place finisher, Mostafa Moawad of Midtown Community School, offered tough competition and edged out the 3rd place finisher Jeremiah DeGuzman of Mary J. Donohoe.

            The District Bee tested the geographic knowledge of twenty-two contestants in grades 7 and 8.  Geography Bee coordinator, Mary Ellen Fitzhenry, was impressed with their knowledge of the world.  The early rounds of this year’s competition focused heavily on United States geography with one round featuring U.S. quarter questions.  Later rounds covered topics like environmental geography and water resources as well as cultural geography.

            Special congratulations to all the contestants who participated in the 2011 Geography Bee including Fahim Chowdhury, Daniel Derowski, Brianna Rodriguez, Diego Arias, Siena Townes, Mohamed Bendary, Casey Harrigan, John Murphy, Joseph Calo, Abner Dela Cruz, Justin San Vicente, Christopher Merrick, Matthew Dynes, Larenda Naykrit, Hakan Esendemir, Clare Corden, Justin Domo, Miso Demko, and Trinity Carey.

Congratulations to Mr. Steve Yurchak and the Washington School art students Fire Prevention Contest Winners:Stephanie Velez, Steven Jimenez, Summer Hannalla, Emily Zhu, Brandon Ely-Ward, Martha Wachulec, Alicia Kate Patterson, Katherine Rivera, Alaishamary Hernandez, Matthew Dynes, Opinder Singh, Kristina Warnock, and Caitlin Szymanski. All winners received awards at the Ceremony held at City Hall on December 9.  A total of $1780.00 was garnered by the students.

Congratulations to 8th grade student Deborah Reyes from Dr. Walter F. Robinson School who was crowned champion of the 27th Annual District Spelling Bee!  Congratulations also to 6th grade student Karolen Eid from Midtown Community School for capturing second place and to 8th grade student Ariana Calle from Woodrow Wilson School who took third place!  Thank you to all 33 contestants for their participation.  Special thanks to our building moderators for their support.
Washington School art students, under the direction of Mr. Steve Yurchak, will be participating in the "Santa Paws Tree Lighting" on Tuesday evening, November 30th, at 7pm at the Bayonne Public Library.  The art club participated in decorating holiday ornaments that will be hanging on the tree, helping to promote the awareness of the Hudson County Animal League.

Congratulations to sixth grade students from Nicholas Oresko School, Maggie Bocchino, Danielle Kaniewski, Nyla Mulcahy, Vittoria Orlando, and Casey Popowski, for winning third place for their "Swing-It Heel" invention at the first Telebrands/Liberty Science Center Student Inventors Day.  Under the direction of Mrs. Kimberly Weimmer, fifth grade science and math teacher, they also earned their school a $500 check and appeared on the WNBC-TV Channel 4 "LX TV" news segment.

Congratulations to Marissa Pacilio, grade 5 teacher of Mathematics/Science at Mary J. Donohoe School.  She is the recipient of one of the PSE&G Environment Grants. The goal of “The Outdoor Classroom” will be to teach students about the interdependence of the environment and people, to encourage community involvement, and to foster responsibility and respect for nature in an urban setting.  The project will offer many engaging hands-on learning experiences addressing the multiple intelligences of the every day classroom. It will serve as a tool in the global education of our student body.
Congratulations! to Mary Beth Wilkinson, Psychologist, who received the 2010 Educator of the Year Award from the Palisades Regional Academy. This award is given to an individual who has demonstrated exceptional skills of best practice, a tireless passion to help children, and a willingness to work outside the box of what the job requires.
Washington Community would like to congratulate Technology teacher Karee Ethridge on being awarded the Honeywell Educators Space Academy Program Grant. Ms. Ethridge will get to spend an exciting week at U.S. Space & Rocket Center in Huntsville, Alabama where she will learn new and exciting teaching strategies and topics for her classroom.
